On Her Way.. From Homelessness to Hope: A Journey of Resilience and Triumph

We are thrilled to share the inspiring story of one of our most remarkable students, who has just graduated from high school and is now heading off to college to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. Her journey with Project Hawai’i, Inc. began when she was just three years old, and today, we celebrate her incredible achievements and the bright future ahead of her.

Born into a young family facing the many challenges of homelessness, she and her siblings experienced hardships that would have overwhelmed many. They lived in a van, her parents struggled to find and maintain jobs, and they faced the daily uncertainties that come with being unhoused. Despite these overwhelming obstacles, this determined young girl found hope and opportunity through the programs offered by Project Hawai’i, Inc.

At the tender age of three, she joined our summer educational program and early childhood training, where her journey of growth and self-discovery began. Year after year, we watched her blossom. With each passing summer, she became more outgoing, more confident, and learned to use her voice—no small feat for a child who is the third in line of five siblings, each facing their own challenges.

When she was six, her love for movement and music was nurtured through our dance and ballet program. This introduction at our camp was the first step to find her talent. We set her up with a scholarship to a local dance company, which later led to her becoming a cheerleader. Through dance, she found a creative outlet and a community that helped her thrive during her formative years.

Growing into a jr leader, this young lady is showing so much compassion and self love. Being part of the summer camp programs has helped her find herself in a loving and accepting way. Forming bonds, learning to become a leader and discovering the world around her.

Her high school years were a testament to her hard work and the power of the opportunities she received through our programs. She was accepted into a private high school on a full scholarship and continued her cheerleading career throughout her time there. In a recent survey from this year’s summer teen mentoring program, she expressed her gratitude for the guidance and workshops provided by Project Hawai’i, Inc., stating that without them, she would not have been able to attend such a privileged school and graduate with honors.

Her parents also shared their thoughts, crediting the teen mentoring program for equipping her with the life and social skills needed to pursue her dreams. They believe that these programs played a crucial role in her development and success, helping her to break the cycle of poverty that so often entraps families like theirs.

When asked about her future, she shared that she wants to become a nurse to help others, inspired by the experiences of her younger brothers who were born with health difficulties and spent much of their early lives in hospitals. Her compassion, resilience, and determination to give back are truly inspiring.

Growing up in extreme poverty did not stop her from being the best she could be. She reached out for support, worked hard, and took advantage of every opportunity that came her way. The summer programs provided by Project Hawai’i, Inc. were not just activities to keep her busy—they were stepping stones that guided her from early childhood to becoming a junior leader, and eventually a teen mentor herself.

Her story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, guidance, and opportunities, even the most difficult circumstances can be overcome. She is breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness, proving that with determination and the right resources, dreams can be realized.

As she heads off to college, we are incredibly proud of her achievements and excited to see what the future holds for her. Her journey from homelessness to hope is a testament to the impact of our programs and the resilience of the human spirit.

We invite you to join us in celebrating her success and supporting the many other children and teens who, like her, have the potential to break the cycle and build a brighter future. Your contributions to Project Hawai’i, Inc. make stories like hers possible.
